Dr. Ash Tewari is an internationally acclaimed board-certified urologist, researcher and innovator in the field of robotic prostate cancer surgery. He has been involved in over 2500 cases. Since his appointment as Director of Robotic Prostatectomy in 2004, he has performed over 2000 robotic prostatectomies. The Weill Cornell Advanced Robotic Technique (ART™) of prostatectomy, standardized by Dr. Tewari, utilizes an anatomic approach to surgery and does not involve the use of any thermal (heat) energy that could damage important nerves that control urinary and sexual functioning.
He has published over 200 peer-reviewed articles in the field of urology. He has published an Atlas on Robotic Surgery with Professor Joseph Smith, Chairman of Urology at Vanderbilt.
An active researcher, Dr. Tewari's main research interests include:
- identification of strategies that improve nerve-sparing to maximize early return of continence and sexual functioning
- identification of molecular markers for prostate cancer
- development of neuroprotective agents
- advancement of ultrasound-guided biopsy techniques
- racial disparities in prostate cancer
- development of predictive models on prostate cancer survival
- novel imaging techniques for surgery
- application of nanotechnology to the treatment of prostate cancer
A sought-after expert in prostate cancer treatment, Dr. Tewari has frequently appeared on television and in the press, in publications including, The New York Times, U.S.News and World Report, Newsweek, and in New York Magazine where he has been listed among New York's top doctors for prostate cancer treatment. He is a member of several professional societies including the American Urological Association, Society of Urologic Oncology, Society of Laparoendoscopic Surgeon, and Society of Minimally Invasive Therapy and International Quality of Life Research. A member of the editorial board of the Gold Journal of Urology and the BJU International, Dr. Tewari is also a reviewer for Journal of Urology, Urology, Journal of Endourology, and the British Journal of Urology International. Dr. Tewari completed his residency training at Henry Ford Hospital in Detroit, Michigan under the guidance and mentorship of Dr. Mani Menon, MD. He has completed fellowships in urologic-oncology research at the University of California, San Francisco and the University of Florida.
He is married to Mamta Tewari; they have two children, Apoorva and Akash. In his free time Dr. Tewari enjoys cricket, photography and hiking.
